Manchester United held on to start their season with a lackluster victory against Tottenham early own goal by Kyle Walker. After Christian Eriksen threw over when clean through, United went ahead as Walker into his own net when trying to deal with Wayne Rooney. That led to a better spell for United, who had a shot until the 65th minute effort Ashley Young. Sergio Romero saved the shot from Eriksen later as one of the five United debutantes.
Louis van Gaal celebrated his 64th birthday with a victory but his team hung on to the end as Romero was called into action twice. Tottenham – who finished fifth in the Premier League last season, six points behind United – started and finished the game strongly just three days after completing his last preseason game against AC Milan in Germany.
